Arbeitskreis 7 Neutronenstreuung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Kristallographie

Tasks

The general objective of this work group is to provide information on methods and applications of neutrons on hot topics - e.g. in the energy or information sector and material science - to the community of crystallographers. We also would like to offer practical guidance to users who whish to use neutrons but have questions like “How do I apply for beam time?”, “In what time scale can I expect to do my experiment?” and so on.
In intervals of about two or three years, the work group offers courses and workshops to strengthen the exchange of information between all scientists interested in or already using neutrons.

Activities and Announcements

2017 Workshop Announcement March 30th - 31st, Karlsruhe

Breaking the Walls: Complementarity of X-Ray and Neutron Scattering

In 2017, we are glad to present a workshop in collaboration with colleagues from the AK Synchrotron that concerns various crystallographic studies related to hot topics in physics, chemistry biology and material sciences that benefit from combining neutron and synchrotron radiation. The workshop will take place immediately after and very close to the 25th annual meeting of the DGK in Karlsruhe (ends at Thursday afternoon, March 30th). The exact location will be mentioned here as soon as possible.

16:00h, Thursday afternoon until 18:00h:
The complementarity of the physical properties of neutron and synchrotron radiation will be introduced in two talks (Dr. Karine Röwer, Martin Meven). In addition an overview of typical large scale facilities, their technique and kind of methods they offer for structure analysis will be given including some information about how to acchieve beam time successfully.
16:00h Welcome of the participants
16:10h Synchrotron Methods and Sources for Structure Analysis, K. Röwer
17:05h Neutron Methods and Sources for Structure Analysis , M. Meven

8:30h, Friday morning until 12:30h:
Experienced scientists will give an insight how to gain unique information relevant for their science by using the complementary of both methods. The following topics are planned:

8:30h: Short range order studied by diffuse neutron and x-ray diffraction, Dr. S. Rosenkranz (Argonne National Laboratory, U.S.A.)
9:25h: Neutron protein crystallography: New developments and recent application examples, Dr. Tobias Schrader (MLZ Garching, Germany)
10:20h: Short break
10:40h: Excitations in solides studied by inelastic x-ray and neutron scattering, Dr M. Le Tacon and Dr F. Weber (KIT)
11:40h: Insights into copper- and iron-based hydrogenation catalysts by neutron and X-ray diffraction methods, Dr. Malte Behrens (Universität Duisburg-Essen).

13:30h, Friday afternoon until 16:30h: An optional guided tour through the ANKA synchrotron source at KIT in Karlsruhe will complete the workshop (end planned for Friday 16:00h, March 31st, time shedule given by Frank Weber/KIT):

13:30h: Departure from Campus Süd by bus (20 min + 10 min walk to ANKA)
14:10h: Start of guided tour at ANKA
15:45h: End of guided tour
16:07h: Return to Campus Süd via bus
16:30h: Arrival at Campus Süd

Important notes

Registration

1. Those registered via the DGK annual meeting registration page please confirm your participation by sending a short e-mail (use as header: Workshop DGK 2017) to the speaker of AK7: martin.meven@frm2.tum.de. You will get an e-mail with further details of the workshop in February.
2. Those who wish to register separately from the DGK meeting can do this by sending a short e-mail (use as header: Workshop DGK 2017) to the same address.

Visit to ANKA

To participate in the optional visit to ANKA you must present a valid ID card or passport on the day of visit.
Also, please send the information about your first name, surname, place and country of birth, date of birth to martin.meven@frm2.tum.de not later than Monday, March 27th.
These data will be collected only for the purpose to get the permission for the visit from the authorities of ANKA who need this information in advance.
Thank you for your understanding!
