Arbeitskreis 7 Neutronenstreuung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Kristallographie

Tasks

The general objective of this work group is to provide information on methods and applications of neutrons on hot topics - e.g. in the energy or information sector and material science - to the community of crystallographers. We also would like to offer practical guidance to users who whish to use neutrons but have questions like “How do I apply for beam time?”, “In what time scale can I expect to do my experiment?” and so on.
In intervals of about two or three years, the work group offers courses and workshops to strengthen the exchange of information between all scientists interested in or already using neutrons.

Activities and Announcements

SNI Satellite Workshop Announcement Sept. 19th – 20th 2018

"Get the best of all": Structure research by merging the peculiarities of synchrotron, neutron, electron or ion radiation

Nowadays challenges in physics, chemistry, biology and material sciences often require crystallographic / structural studies that combine smartly various scattering methods using complementary synchrotron, neutron, electron or ion radiation. The workshop consists of two parts: in the first part, the peculiarities of the different kinds of radiation and their generation be discussed including an overview of the corresponding large scale facilities and the kind of methods they offer for structure analysis. In the second part, focusing on applications, experienced scientists will give an insight into the unique information they gain by merging the complementary methods. The following topics are planned:

  • quantum phenomena/correlated systems (magnetism and superconductivity)
  • macromolecular and biological studies (life sciences)
  • functional materials for energy research
  • etc.

The workshop will take place from Sept. 19th 2018 afternoon (16:00h) to Sept. 20th 2018 until lunchtime (13:00h). In addition, an optional guided tour through the Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz research reactor FRM II in the afternoon of Sept. 20th is planned at 15:00h. Please note that participation in the guided tour requires a registration until August 31rd latestly. The event is organized by the working group “Neutron Scattering” of the German Society of Crystallography (DGK). A registration to the SNI conference is not required to participate in this workshop. The workshop is located on the TUM campus near the location of the SNI conference (details will follow soon).

Breaking the Walls: Complementarity of X-Ray and Neutron Scattering

In 2017, a satellite workshop took place in Karlsruhe after the DGK annual meeting from March 30th - 31st in collaboration with colleagues from the AK Synchrotron concerning various crystallographic studies related to hot topics in physics, chemistry biology and material sciences combining neutron and synchrotron radiation including a visit on the ANKA synchrotron facility.

2014

In the International Year of Crystallgraphy the work group offered an introductory neutron workshop on March 21st - 22nd about neutron sources, powder and single crystal diffraction, spectroscopy, reflectometry, tomography, material sciences and soft matter and a guided tour through the BERII neutron source of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) including the instrumentation related to these topics.

2012
